Let MVS be the Data Server

By Steve Force

Let’s face it. MVS-based systems have an identity crisis. One faction believes they can do the job of data processing better on distributed platforms rather than on MVS. Users have their pet software products and natural preferences as to which hardware platform and and operating system environment to use. And it seems that the bean counters and budget meisters concur, allowing this to happen.

If the data processing trend seems to be getting away from the MVS operating system environment, what is the value in keeping MVS? ..

Using TCP/IP Facilities

for MVS Job Submission and Output Retrieval

By Steve Force

Due to the interest in linking disparate operating systems together, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is becoming more prevalent in the MVS computing environment. People who previously needed to just submit jobs and examine job output on a MVS host (server) can now do both without leaving their host environment (client) and without logging on to TSO.

Whats all the fuss about JES3?

One Man’s Experience with JES2 and JES3

By Stephen Force

JES3 is a very complex MVS Job Entry subsystem (JES). It offers more to the MVS operating system than JES2 offers, but for a price. Because JES3 has more control over devices and job control than JES2, it follows that the complexity of potential problems increase.

The purpose of this article is to help JES2 users better understand JES3. It is not intended to be a JES3 primer nor to be considered an i-depth critique of JES. However, some knowledge of JES is helpful in understanding various technical references.
